Interesting #forest #microclimate analysis focused on #beech at the southern range edge in Appenines 🇮🇹.

Large #offset values: on the south-facing slopes cooling of near-ground temperature was as high as 8.6 °C for Tmax

Nice visualization of this effect👇 https://twitter.com/ForestTweeting/status/1382336008595865606

Preparing my talk for tomorrow's webinar @deepsthlmuni invited by @Hylander_K to present, together w/ @eva_gril, our ongoing research on forest microclimates & the growing climatic debt of understory plant communities #IMPRINT @ForMicroclimate @BRichard_Ben @UMR_EDYSAN @INEE_CNRS

If you want to know more on the T°C offset (open vs. forest) & why it matters for forest ecosystems under contemporary climate change, check this review led by @PieterDeFrenne & @Hylander_K on #forest #microclimates ⬇️

Here is one of our sites in the state forest of Mormal @ONF_Officiel This summer, we will download plenty of 🌡 data to show you the offset between open & 🌳 habitats in 🇨🇵 & to feed the great #SoilTemp database from the @SoilTemp_proj of @JLembrechts ➡️ Stay tuned 😀

You can zoom in to see the 3 state forests (Mormal, Blois, Aigoual) that we equipped last summer with a denser network of #microclimate loggers & which will be flown over this summer to get #LiDAR data of 🌳🌳🌳🌳 We will make the map more interactive as soon as we get more data

We join this urgent call for a climate reference network but suggest to extend it into forests🌳 and on topographically heterogeneous terrain🗻.

Why? See our new Ecological Soundings piece in @GEB_macro with @JLembrechts @EkoLogIt @BrettScheffers

We have an amazing climate reference network of pristinely sited measurement stations here in the US. We should establish similar reference networks worldwide to provide high quality climate obs going forward, as @AGU_Eos discusses (w/ @climpeter and I) https://eos.org/articles/a-global-monitoring-system-could-change-the-future-of-climatology
